A garden bed is more than just a patch of dirt where you stick a few plants. It is the defining structure of your landscape. It creates the borders, softens the hard lines of fences and paving, and introduces colour, texture, and life to the property. However, in Dunsborough’s challenging coastal conditions, a garden bed that isn’t built properly from the ground up will struggle to survive.
The Master Grass specialises in professional garden bed installation and renovation. We don’t just plant; we build environments. We understand that success lies beneath the surface. If the soil is poor, the plants will die. If the layout is wrong, the maintenance becomes a nightmare. We combine horticultural knowledge with structural landscaping to create garden beds that thrive and enhance your home.

The shape of your garden beds dictates the flow of your yard. We move away from the "wobbly line" syndrome—random, wavy edges that look accidental and are hard to mow.

Geometric Clarity
For modern homes, we often use straight lines or long, sweeping curves with a consistent radius. This looks intentional and architectural. It makes the garden feel cleaner.

Scale and Proportion
A common mistake is making beds too narrow. A 30cm wide strip against a fence isn’t a garden; it’s a garnish. It dries out too fast and doesn’t allow for layering. We recommend beds that are 80cm to 1m+ wide. This allows us to plant in layers — a taller screening hedge at the back, a mid-layer of shrubs, and a groundcover layer at the front. This "tiered" planting creates lushness and depth.

Zoning
We place beds to serve a purpose.
Screening beds block the neighbours.
Framing beds highlight the entrance.
Feature beds break up large areas of lawn.
Every bed has a job to do.
Dunsborough and the South West are famous for their sandy soils. While this is great for drainage, it is terrible for holding nutrients and water. This sand is often “gutless” (lacking organic matter) and can become hydrophobic (water-repellent). If you simply dig a hole in the grey sand and drop a plant in, it’s like planting in a sieve. The water runs straight past the roots, and the plant starves.
Our installation process starts with massive soil improvement. We don’t just scratch the surface.
We turn over the existing ground to break up compaction.
We import high-quality organic compost, matured manure, and clay/loam additives. The clay is critical—it binds the sand particles together, creating sites for water and nutrients to hold on to.
We rotary hoe or dig these amendments deep into the profile, creating a rich, dark living soil that encourages deep root run.
We treat the soil to ensure it actually absorbs water rather than repelling it.
This preparation is an investment. You pay for it once, but it pays you back for years in faster growth, healthier plants, and lower water bills.
We are spoiled for choice in Dunsborough, but we must choose wisely. The salt air, the wind, and the hot dry summers filter out delicate species. We curate plant palettes that work.

Using species like Westringia (Coastal Rosemary), Adenanthos (Woolly Bush), and Grevilleas. These are bomb-proof, drought-tolerant, and attract birds. They suit the beach house aesthetic perfectly.

Using Olives, Rosemary, Lavender, and succulents. These love our dry summers and sandy soils and provide a structured, classy look.

In sheltered courtyards, we can create micro-climates using Philodendrons, Ferns, and Palms, provided the soil prep is adequate and irrigation is installed.
We lay out the plants onsite before planting, adjusting spacing to account for their mature size. We don’t overplant (which looks good for a month then becomes a crowded mess) or underplant.

Mulch is the sunscreen for your soil. In Dunsborough summers, bare soil bakes. Moisture evaporates, and weeds germinate in the light.
We finish every garden bed installation with a thick (75mm-100mm) layer of premium mulch. We typically recommend:
Black/Dark Brown Mulch
Creates a high contrast that makes green foliage pop. It looks sharp and modern.
Pine Bark
Breaks down slowly and feeds the soil.
Tree Lopper Mulch
Great for large native areas, very natural looking.
Mulch suppresses weeds, keeps the root zone cool, and retains moisture. It is the single biggest factor in reducing garden maintenance.

Yes. We offer garden renovations. We remove the old, woody plants, improve the soil (often bringing in new mix), repair the edging, and replant. It’s a facelift for your yard.
Yes. We can install drip lines (the most efficient way to water beds) or sprayers, connected to your retic controller. Drip line under mulch is the gold standard—zero evaporation loss.
You need a physical edge. We install limestone, steel, or brick edging to create a barrier. Without an edge, the grass will always win.

We operate from Dunsborough and work across the South West—Busselton through to Margaret River, including Yallingup and Cowaramup. If you're outside that core (Dunsborough East, Siesta Park, Metricup), send your location and we'll check the drive.
