We all know plants need water and sunlight. But lawns are hungry. They are high-performance plants that are constantly being cut and regenerating. In Dunsborough, the natural soil provides almost zero nutrition. Our coastal sands are essentially inert — they have no Nitrogen, no Potassium, no Iron. If you rely on nature alone, your lawn will be pale, thin, and prone to weeds.
The Master Grass provides professional lawn fertilising programs designed specifically for South West conditions. We move beyond the "chuck a handful of pellets" approach. We treat lawn nutrition as a science. We use commercial-grade products that deliver sustained, balanced feeding to create deep colour, strong roots, and disease resistance.

Many homeowners buy cheap bags of fertiliser from the hardware store. These are often agricultural-grade products high in soluble Nitrogen (like Urea).
The Surge: They release all their nutrients at once. You mow like crazy for two weeks because the lawn grows 10cm a day.
The Crash: Then it runs out. The lawn goes pale again.
The Burn: The high salt content can burn the leaf if not watered in perfectly.
The Leaching: Because our sand drains so fast, most of that cheap fertiliser washes past the roots and ends up in the groundwater (polluting Geographe Bay) before the plant can use it.

We use Controlled Release Fertilisers (CRF) and premium liquid foliar feeds.
In Dunsborough, fertiliser is useless if you don’t have a wetting agent. Our sandy soils become hydrophobic (water-repellent) as they dry out. You can fertilise, but if the water beads on the surface and runs off, the fertiliser never dissolves into the root zone.
We include commercial wetting agents in our program. These surfactants break the surface tension, allowing water (and the dissolved fertiliser) to soak evenly into the profile.

We recommend a seasonal program:
A balanced feed with good Nitrogen to kickstart growth as the soil warms up.
A slow-release feed with extra Potassium to help the lawn hold water and resist heat stress.
Crucial. We apply a fertiliser high in Potassium and Phosphorus to build root mass before the cold hits. This keeps the lawn greener for longer into winter and ensures it wakes up faster in spring.
We switch to liquid iron and trace elements. Granular fertiliser doesn’t work well in cold soil, but liquids are absorbed through the leaf. This fights off the "winter blues" and keeps moss at bay.
We are trained in application rates. Applying too much fertiliser is worse than applying none. We use calibrated spreaders to ensure even coverage—no dark green stripes or burnt patches. We blow down all hard surfaces (paving, driveways) immediately after application because Iron can stain porous stone.

Generally, yes. We recommend keeping pets off the lawn while we apply and until the product is watered in and the grass is dry (usually 24 hours). This prevents them tracking granules into the house or eating them.
Yes. We will usually ask you to run your retic after we visit. This activates the granules and washes any dust off the leaf to prevent burn.
It could be pH. If the soil is too acidic or alkaline, the chemical lock-up prevents the roots absorbing nutrients. We can test your soil pH and apply lime or soil wetters to fix the chemistry.

We operate from Dunsborough and work across the South West—Busselton through to Margaret River, including Yallingup and Cowaramup. If you're outside that core (Dunsborough East, Siesta Park, Metricup), send your location and we'll check the drive.
