NEW HOME LandscapING

TURNING A "SITE" INTO A HOME

Building a new home is a marathon. By the time you get the keys, you’re often exhausted, the budget is tight, and the backyard is just a square of sand or builder’s rubble. It’s tempting to ignore it, or to throw down some turf just to stop the dust. But the outside of your home is half your living space — especially in the South West. If it doesn’t work, the house doesn’t feel finished.

The Master Grass specialises in new home landscaping in Dunsborough and the surrounding region. We bridge the gap between “handover day” and “living in it.” We don’t just install features; we design and build a cohesive outdoor environment that connects with your home, handles the coastal climate, and suits your lifestyle.

Our goal is simple: to take a blank, messy site and turn it into a finished space with clean lines, functional zones, and a layout that makes sense.

THE "BLANK CANVAS" TRAP

A blank yard looks simple, but it’s full of hidden decisions. Where should the drying court go? How do you get bins from the side gate to the street without dragging them through mud? Does the alfresco level match the garden level? Where will the water go when it rains?

Many new homeowners rush into these decisions. They put a garden bed in, then realise it blocks access. They lay turf, then realise they need a path, and have to dig the turf back up. This ad-hoc approach is expensive and stressful.

We solve this by planning the yard as a system.

  • Before we lay a single paver, we look at flow.

  • We identify the “desire lines” (where people will naturally walk).

  • We check the solar orientation to put plants where they’ll thrive, not where they’ll burn.

  • We plan for drainage so your patio doesn’t flood.

This upfront thinking prevents the “I wish we’d thought of that” moments down the track.

OUR NEW HOME LANDSCAPING SERVICES

We offer a comprehensive scope for new builds, allowing us to handle the entire exterior transformation.

Site Clean & Prep

Builders leave mess. We start by clearing the site, removing rubble, and correcting the sub-grade levels. This is the unglamorous work that ensures the final finish is level and stable.

Hardscaping & Structure

This is the skeleton of the yard. We install paving for alfrescos, paths, and driveways. We build retaining walls if the block requires levelling. We install the edging—limestone, steel, or brick—that defines the garden beds and lawn areas.

Softscaping & Planting

This is the flesh on the bones. We prepare the soil (critical in sandy areas), install irrigation lines if required, and plant out the garden beds with species suited to the Dunsborough climate. We lay high-quality turf, ensuring the levels meet the paving perfectly for a trip-free finish.

Finishing Touches

We mulch the beds, install steppers, and clean the site down. When we leave, the yard isn’t just “installed”—it’s ready to use.

DESIGNING FOR THE South west LIFESTYLE

New homes in Dunsborough and South West WA range from permanent family residences to holiday rentals. Each needs a different approach.

For family homes, durability is key. We design tough lawns for cricket and footy, robust planting that survives kids and dogs, and practical access paths for bikes and surfboards. We create zones for adults (fire pits, seating) and zones for messy play.

For holiday homes, low maintenance is the priority. You don’t want to spend your entire holiday gardening. We focus on “lock and leave” designs—hardy plants, extensive mulch zones, automated reticulation compatibility, and limited lawn areas (or lawn varieties that handle neglect well). We build spaces that look good when you arrive, with minimal effort required.

WHY "CLEAN LINES" MATTER

You’ll hear us talk about “clean lines” a lot. In new home landscaping, this isn’t just an aesthetic preference; it’s a practical one.

Clean lines mean straight, defined edges. They mean paths that align with doorways. They mean garden beds that have a clear geometric relationship to the house. Why does this matter?

Because simple, geometric layouts are easier to maintain. A complex, curvy, fussy garden is a nightmare to mow and edge. A garden with strong, clean lines is quicker to look after and visually enlarges the space. It makes a standard residential block feel like a designed landscape.

STAGED INSTALLS VS THE FULL PACKAGE

We know budgets are real. Sometimes you can’t do the Dream Backyard in week one. We are happy to work with you on a staged plan.

We can design the full master plan, then break it down. Maybe Phase 1 is the “mud control” phase—getting the driveway, main paths, and immediate alfresco area done. Phase 2 might be the rear lawn and privacy screening. Phase 3 could be the feature garden beds and fire pit.

By planning the whole thing upfront, we ensure Phase 1 doesn’t get in the way of Phase 3. We put sleeves under paths for future irrigation. We set levels correctly from day one. This saves you money in the long run because you’re not re-doing work.

FAQ'S

Do you work off existing plans?

Yes. If you have a landscape architect’s plan, we can quote and build to that specification. If you don’t have a plan, we can help you create a practical layout based on our experience.

Do you handle council approvals?

For standard landscaping (turf, paving, gardens), approval is rarely needed. If your project involves significant retaining walls or structures, we can advise on whether approvals are triggered, though the homeowner usually handles the submission.

What about reticulation?

We work alongside irrigation specialists. We can plan the garden layout to suit irrigation zones, ensuring hydro-zoning (grouping plants with similar water needs) is achieved.

How soon after handover can you start?

We can quote off plans before you get the keys, so we’re ready to go. However, we always do a final check measure on site once the builder is finished, as site levels often change during construction.

Areas We Serve

We operate from Dunsborough and work across the South West—Busselton through to Margaret River, including Yallingup and Cowaramup. If you're outside that core (Dunsborough East, Siesta Park, Metricup), send your location and we'll check the drive.
